Are They Serious?

24 September 07

I like a good watermelon eating contest every now and then. I’ll even admit to downing five hot dogs at a birthday party when I was 12. (My mother cringes at this memory, I’m sure.) But a competitive eating circuit? Are these people crazy?

Yahoo News reports that “eater X” recently won a burrito eating contest after downing over 10 burritos in 12 minutes.

The burrito record holder, Eric “Badlands” Booker, has retired from competitive eating and wasn’t on hand to defend his title. But other contestants well-known on the eating contest circuit showed up.

There is an “eating contest circuit?” I wonder if they have petitioned for Olympics entry yet? I wonder if competitive eating is as doping plagued as professional bicycling?

Madeleine L’Engle’s Voice Will Live On

8 September 07

I just read on NY Times website that Madeleine L’Engle, author of my favorite children’s book,  A Wrinkle in Time, has died. She was 88.

I still have my copy of A Wrinkle in Time, although it is battered and missing the front cover. (Actually, I think it might even be my sister’s book!) I’ve read it many times over the years. It has never lost the wonder it gave me all those years ago.

Something to Make You Laugh

26 July 07

If you can access YouTube, here is a great video that made me laugh out loud this morning.

I found this on FP Passport. It is a prison in the Philippines that  has choreographed yard exercises to mimic popular music videos and musical routines. The prisoner portraying Michael’s date is a hysterical touch.

So I’ve just been reading about the Virginia Tech killings and I am just shocked. As a pacifist, it is so difficult for me to understand how or why someone would do something like this. But I am also a realist and I am all too aware of the high level of violence in our world today. Kids and professors dying in Virginia. Soldiers and civilians dying in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sudanese dying in Darfur. People worldwide dying of Aids & communicable diseases. People worldwide dying of malnutrition – obesity & starvation.

There is a lot of work to do to make our world a better place.

The Painted Veil

8 February 07

Movie Recommend:

The Painted Veil is a beautifully filmed movie set in the lush Southern Chinese province of Guangxi. It is the story of a dysfunctional young British couple, Naomi Watts and Edward Norton, dealing with their marital problems in the midst of a devastating cholera outbreak. Norton’s character is a bacteriologist/doctor who travels from Shanghai to a remote countryside village to investigate and treat the outbreak. The movie is set in 1920s colonial China meanwhile anti-foreign sentiments are growing.

The most appealing aspect of the film for me was the scenery. This part of China is breathtaking and I swooned at every scene. I traveled in the area the movie was filmed – around Guilin, along the Li River. The movie is based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham and is reminiscent of the Merchant-Ivory films. The DH thought it was a bit slow and dangerously close to the realm of “chick flicks,” but I suspect he enjoyed it anyway.
